10/13/2021 - COUNTY ELECTION TO FEATURE NEW VOTING EQUIPMENT

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, NEW JERSEY (October 13, 2021) Cumberland County is full of events, fairs and festivals in the fall and if you attend one you might see Cumberland County Board of Elections Administrator Lizbeth Hernandez and her staff demonstrating the new voting equipment the Cumberland County Board of Elections will be using for this year’s general election. Hernandez indicates that the Board of Elections staff is reaching out to the voting public in a variety of ways to familiarize them with the new equipment. Hernandez stated, “You will see our staff at events demonstrating the new voting equipment and we are inviting the public to come to our office at 555 Shiloh Pike (Rt. 49) Hopewell Township, Bridgeton to try out the new voting machines prior to Election Day during our regular business hours of Monday thru Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.”.

Board of Elections Commissioner Robin Wood describes the new voting equipment as “state of the art” explaining, “We will be using electronic touch screen and ballot scanning technology that is very similar in appearance and user experience to the systems we use in our work places and in many of our private personal transactions.” Wood added, “The Dominion Voting Systems ImageCast X Ballot Marking Device and Image Cast Precinct along with Tenex Software Solutions Precinct Central Touchpad Electronic Poll Book that we will be using is an accurate and secure voting system which has been used successfully in many other states.”

Darlene Barber, Deputy Director of the Cumberland County Commissioners and Co-Liaison to the Board of Elections called the new voting equipment “a much needed upgrade” stating, “While we are all familiar with the old voting machines, the new equipment is much more efficient in tabulating voting results.” Barber added, “The Board of Elections will have staff at each polling place to assist those who need help with the new equipment.”

Cumberland County Commissioner Director Joseph Derella expressed appreciation for the way the new equipment accommodates people with disabilities. Derella stated, “The old machines made it difficult for people with visual or dexterity challenges to vote in person. The new voting equipment has a number of features that accommodate the needs of people who have difficulty seeing or marking a ballot.”
