11/19/2012 - Health Dept reminds residents of immunizations

HEALTH  DEPT.  REMINDS   RESIDENTS  ABOUT  IMMUNIZATIONS

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, NJ – The Cumberland County Health Department is reminding residents and first responders to get immunizations. As recovery efforts continue in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in areas across New Jersey, questions are being raised regarding the need for immunizations. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), outbreaks of infectious diseases after floods such as we experienced here in NJ are unusual, and there is generally no increased risk of getting vaccine-preventable diseases. However, because each situation is unique, there may be the need to vaccinate particular individuals involved in clean-up efforts, those providing medical care or displaced individuals living in communal settings for prolonged periods of time.

Everyone should be immunized with a primary series of tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap). According to the current CDC guidelines, individuals should receive a tetanus booster if they have not been vaccinated for tetanus during the past 10 years. As always, hepatitis B vaccines is recommended for people who will be providing direct patient care, or who are otherwise expected to have routine contact with the blood and bodily fluids of others.

The Cumberland County Health Department provides the Tetanus vaccine (Tdap), the Hepatitis A vaccine, and the Hepatitis B vaccine, free of charge to all first responders. Any first responders who are interested in receiving an immunization should contact the health department to set up an appointment.
