Our People of the Century            Dr. Mary Bacon: A Half Century of Caring

An early woman physician, Dr. Mary Bacon opened an office in Bridgeton during the great influenza epidemic of the early 20th century.

Born in 1893, Bacon graduated from Women's Medical College in 1918. She opened her office at 278 E. Commerce St. and continued her practice until she was no longer able.

In 1968, Bacon was honored by the American Medical Association for 50 years of practice. The following year, she was named Doctor of the Year by the state of New Jersey.
