Salary: TBD (Commensurate with Experience)
Duties: Provides legal assistance and advice to the Board of County Commissioners, County Administration, and all Department and Division Heads. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
• Representation of the County and its respective departments in disciplinary matters, departmental hearings, grievances, arbitrations, labor disputes, and appeals relating to the same
• Providing advice on matters relating to bonding, procurement, public contracts law, and other similar issues that may arise from day to day
• Matters before the Public Employees Relations Commission
• Civil commitment and Child Support hearings, as needed
• Provides legal guidance with respect to the Open Public Records Act (“OPRA”); serves as OPRA Records Custodian for County Administration
• May initiate or defend litigation on behalf of the County, or its departments as necessary
• Representation of Constitutional Officers in connection with personnel and administrative matters
• Representation of the Cumberland County Insurance Commission, a self-insurance and joint insurance arrangement through the NJCEL on behalf of the County and its related entities
• Attendance at all Commissioner meetings and other scheduled meetings, which may take place during day and evening hours and other meetings upon request
• Bail remission applications in the Superior Court
• Trains County employees on various topics including but not limited to sexual harassment and discrimination
• Assists with assignment, monitoring, and supervision of outside counsel with respect to assigned litigation matters.
• Any other legal matters which may be brought to the attention of the Legal Department
Requirements: License to practice as an Attorney-at-Law in the State of New Jersey with a minimum of three (3) years of experience in litigation, and transactional work, with an emphasis on public entity representation preferred. Demonstrated, superior legal writing skills required.
Hours: 40+ hours per week. Typical work shift is Monday through Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm. However, this position requires work beyond the typical shift.
Note: Offers of employment for this title are contingent upon successful completion of physical fitness testing that includes drug screenings and criminal background checks.
