Heavy Equipment Operator
Department of Public Works & Property
Provisional – Pending Civil Service Procedures
Salary: $39,618


Duties and Responsibilities:
Operates equipment including, but not limited to, graders, backhoes, front end loaders, dump trucks.
Operates graders for leveling as well as operates equipment to load materials such as soil, stone, etc.
Operates dump trucks to transport materials and operates backhoe and front end loaders as required.
Operates equipment for general site preparation and performs job-related duties as assigned.
Performs emergency repairs on vehicles and equipment in the field or in the shop.
Performs routine inspection and maintenance on vehicles and equipment such as checking oil, water, tires, etc.
Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and promotes workplace safety.
Ensures that the crew takes safety precautions and that proper procedures are taken to protect the public from injury.
May supervise crews in day to day operations.
May Supervise work operations and/or functional programs, and has responsibility for employees work performance.
May supervise employees engaged in the work involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, drains, catch basins, culverts, and related structures.
Inspects and checks completed work to ensure proper road repair and maintenance procedures are followed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Ability to operate heavy equipment.
Knowledge of heavy equipment and vehicle operation and maintenance inspection.
Knowledge of vehicle and equipment. Ability to read, understand, and follow safety procedures.
Ability to use hand and power tools.
Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects over 50 pounds.

Requirements:
High school diploma or GED
Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance of construction equipment.
Two (2) years of experience in operating heavy equipment, driving a dump truck and tractor & trailer.
Possession of a valid New Jersey Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with endorsements.

Note:
Offers of employment for this title are contingent upon successful completion of physical fitness testing that includes drug screening, criminal background check, and verifications of clean driving record. Ongoing random drug and alcohol testing.
