Building Maintenance Worker/Maintenance Worker 1, Grounds/Department of Corrections
Starting Salary: $31,277 to $35,776 Based on Experience


Duties:
Under direction, performs various routine maintenance/repair tasks either singularly or in any combination thereof in the following fields: masonry, plastering, carpentry, painting, plumbing, steam fitting, sheet metal, electrical, glazing, and mechanical; does related work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities:

 Moves heavy furniture, supplies and equipment.
Works on ladders, scaffolds and platforms
Knowledge of the maintenance involved for a low pressure boiler room operation.
Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies.
Performs the routine work involved in creating concrete structures, mixes and pours cement and aggregates
Repairs brick and concrete structures, repairs plastered walls and ceilings.
Prepares and paints interior and exterior surfaces consisting of metal, wood, and masonry.
Performs general plumbing services such as replacing washers and gaskets.
Repairs roofs, drains, rainspouts, and so forth, using general sheet metal techniques.
Repairs leaks in pipes and drain clogs.
Performs general electrical maintenance such as replacing light bulbs, fuses / breakers, wall plates, switches, and light fixtures.
Performs routine operation checks on blowers, motors, and regulators, and reports malfunctions immediately.
Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, and practices involved in performing general maintenance and repair work.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in performing general maintenance.
Ability to exercise safety precautions in the work area.
Ability to understand, carry out oral and written instructions, maintains records.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems.

License:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Hours:
Shifts vary and include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. 40 Hours per work week.

Note:
Offers of employment for this title are contingent upon successful completion of physical fitness testing that includes drug screening, criminal background check, and verifications of clean driving record. Position includes ongoing random drug and alcohol testing.
