Substance Abuse Counselor Intern

Department of Corrections

Starting Salary: $32,455 (Prorated Based on Hours Worked)

 

Duties:             Under close supervision of a Supervising Counselor (LCADC), receives formal clinical supervision and on-the-job training to learn the skills to provide substance abuse counseling, treatment services, assessment, and documentation and/or report compilation; complies with all the applicable Federal Laws and Stats statues and regulations; learns the varied tasks involved in providing counseling and other rehabilitative services; does other related duties as assigned.

 

Requirements:  Possession of a high school diploma or a GED. Ability to use critical-thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Ability to appropriately and successfully communicate with  a variety of clients within an institutionalized corrections setting. Ability to prepare reports and presentations. Ability to interpret laws, rules, and regulations and apply same to specific situations. Ability to learn to identify problems of substance abuse clients, evaluate client progress, and the varying methods used to treat substance abuse.     

 

Hours:              As-Needed; not to exceed 19.5 hours per week. Typical work shifts include 8:30am – 4:00pm, Monday through Friday.

 

Note:                Appointees will be granted a maximum of three (3) years to complete the Intern Program and must provide proof of enrollment in the appropriate coursework. The inability of an employee in this title to adequately progress in the established training program, receive the applicable certification within three (3) years, and/or attain a level of performance warranting advancement to the Substance Abuse Counselor 2 title shall be considered a cause for separation.

Offers of employment for this title are contingent upon successful completion of physical fitness testing and includes drug screenings and criminal background checks.
