Salary Range: $31,352 - $42,321
Description: Position functions as the Horticultural Assistant. The objective of this position is to develop an educational program to meet the needs of Cumberland County residents focused on gardening, environmental issues and landscaping.
Duties: Under the direction of the Department Head and/or agricultural agents, develops and prepares weekly radio programs on a timely subject matter; prepares quarterly newsletters; prepares pertinent news articles for local newspapers; assists agricultural agents with educational programs and conducting applied research projects on request; performs soil pH and soluble salt testing, reports results, and packages soil samples to be sent to the Rutgers Soil Lab; reviews current literature and attends seminars and in-service training; coordinates the Master Gardener Program to include organizing new classes on an annual basis, overseeing on-going projects and keeping accurate program records; develops and carries out classes for the public in various programmatic areas; informs agents of areas where further educational information is needed; keeps accurate records of daily departmental activities as required; provides technical assistance to other programs with some administrative activities; responds to telephone calls, mail/email requests and office visits from Cumberland County residents; does other related duties as required.
Requirements: Associate’s Degree in agriculture or related fields, with preference to agriculture. At least two (2) years’ experience in an agricultural setting preferred. Computer competency with Microsoft Office software programs. Effective written and oral communication skills that can be successfully applied to a diverse customer population. Ability to apply innovative and creative ideas into program content that will attract adult participation. Ability to receive and apply information and techniques designed to upgrade the program’s quality and increase participation. Possession of a valid N.J. Driver’s License and evidence of insurance and vehicle.
Hours: Typical work shifts are 8:30am – 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. Occasional evening and weekend hours required.
Note: Offers of employment for this title are contingent upon successful completion of physical fitness testing, to include drug screenings, and verifications of N.J. Driver’s License status.
