Senior Public Safety Telecommunicator

Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection

Starting Salary: $35,761

                                   

Duties:   Reports to Supervising PST; takes the lead in receiving and responding to telephone or electronic requests for assistance; provides orientation, training and mentoring  to new and subordinate personnel; prepares reports; receives requests for emergency assistance; calmly determines nature of call and may transfer caller as appropriate; obtains, verifies, and records location, caller’s name, nature, severity, and status of emergency, and obtains other appropriate information for full assessment; provides first aid or CPR instructions as necessary; provides precautionary instructions and advice to help ensure personal safety and/or minimize property loss pending arrival of fire, police, or other assistance; refers non-emergencies to appropriate agencies; may dispatch non-emergency personnel or equipment; relays information or instructions to field units;  receives, monitors, records, summarizes, and transmits emergency data;  determines appropriate agency(ies) to respond; dispatches law enforcement, fire or medical assistance based on pre-established response plans; seeks guidance from supervisor when circumstances warrant significant deviation from pre-established plans;  coordinates dispatches involving two or more jurisdictions; prepares reports and statistical data;  inspects and makes adjustments or minor repairs to communications and related equipment; detects and takes alternative/corrective action when communication system or program errors occur and reports malfunctions; related duties as assigned.
 

Requirements:  Two years of experience working in receiving, transmitting, and relaying of video display and/or radio messages and in the receiving, relaying and recording of complaints and requests for emergency assistance including the use of video display, data processing, automatic number identification, automatic location identification, switching equipment, or other technology equipment.  Strong communication skills and computer literacy.  Knowledge of emergency management and medical treatment procedures.   Ability to document emergency situations and calls.  Knowledge of medical, fire, police and other emergency terminology.  Knowledge of procedures for dispatching emergency and non-emergency equipment and personnel.  Knowledge of local geography and street locations. Knowledge of procedures for investigating and resolving complaints.  Ability to organize and assign work to subordinates. Ability to transmit orders of supervisory officers to subordinate staff.   Ability to maintain confidentiality of information received.
