Senior Juvenile Detention Officer (Provisional)

Corrections Department

Starting Salary:  $38,964

 

Duties

 Reports to the Superintendent; takes the lead over a group of juvenile detention officers by issuing instructions and assignments; maintains detention facility security on an assigned tour of duty or as a shift leader; controls general conduct and behavior of juvenile residents including the discipline, custodial, recreational, transportation, and housekeeping functions; receives instructions from supervisor and distributes work assignments among juvenile detention officers (JDOs) and other employees to ensure that work assignments are carried out; collects and records into a log pertinent, factual, and identifying information from incarcerated juveniles (name, nickname, religion, race, etc.) and parents; assists juveniles and parents in completing the initial intake process in accord with the established procedures; instructs new employees by explaining procedures and answering questions; writes factual, concise incident reports to establish a formal record; resolves informal complaints of JDOs and juveniles and refers more serious types to supervisor; applies first aid techniques as appropriate, performs related tasks as required.

Requirements

Two years of experience in the care and custody of institutionally confined juveniles or young inmates.  Computer literacy.  Strong interpersonal skills.  Knowledge of policies, procedures, and guidelines for a juvenile detention facility.  Knowledge of methods of handling juveniles to secure cooperation and maintain discipline.   Ability to issue clear, concise, and correct oral and/or written instructions and assignments.  Ability to learn and apply first aid techniques in crisis situations.  Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare concise and factual written reports.
