JOB DESCRIPTION: Under direction, provides intake, assessment, education sessions, individual and group counseling to individuals (inmates) at the County Department of Corrections who participate in a program involving the treatment for alcohol and drug abuse. Conducts education programs concerning substance abuse for families of inmates. Attends weekly clinical staff/supervision meeting. Does other related duties.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS: NJ Certification as Alcohol & Drug Counselor. Minimum of one (1) year of experience providing counseling or training in the prevention and treatment of substance abuse with the criminal justice population.

Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of alcohol and drug abuse and dependence, knowledge of the social, economic problems of substance dependent individuals, knowledge of referral, treatment and education of substance abusing clients and their families. Knowledge of interviewing and counseling techniques. Ability to evaluate and assess the needs and problems of clients. Ability to establish a therapeutic relationship with clients. Ability to prepare clear and accurate documentation of findings and progress reports; and maintain essential records and files. Ability to work a flexible schedule.

Applicants must possess Certification as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor issued by the state of New Jersey, Division of Consumer Affairs, Department of Law and Public Safety.
