County Implements Road Opening Ordinance

Bridgeton, NJ – The Cumberland County Board of Chosen Freeholders adopted a “Road Opening Ordinance” that regulates how County Roads are opened, and when they are opened, the appropriate procedure that should be followed for restoring the road when the work is complete.

Cumberland County Deputy Director and Public Works Freeholder Liaison Doug Long said, “In addition to hosting a Countywide Public Meeting with anyone who might be impacted, County Engineer John Knoop and his team also sent correspondence to all Municipal Clerks in Cumberland County as well as to various utilities to make them aware of the new requirements that the County is putting into place.  The leadership in our Public Works Department has worked very hard to ensure that a good process has been instituted to assist with the implementation of the Ordinance”.

The Ordinance regulates any excavation, opening, or other type of work within any road, street, highway or public way controlled by the County of Cumberland.  This also includes the construction or alteration of driveways that are located within the County right of way.  Residents and potential applicants are encouraged to obtain the application and view the Ordinance in its entirety on the County Website at cumberlandcountynj.gov under the Department of Public Works and Property or visit the Department located 800 E. Commerce Street, Bridgeton or they may call the Department at (856)453-2192.
