CITY  OF  MILLVILLE,  CUMBERLAND  COUNTY,  NJ

Cumberland county, MILLVILLE, NJ – The New Jersey Regional Operations Intelligence Center reports that Cumberland County’s Office of Emergency Management has confirmed an active liquid chlorine leak at the Millville Water Treatment Facility located at 101 Ware Ave in Millville, NJ at 9:37pm last night.  At the time, personnel from the New Jersey State Police, Millville Office of Emergency Management, Millville Water Department, Millville Fire Dept., Millville Rescue, Vineland Fire Department, Cumberland County Haz Mat, Cumberland County Mobile Field Communication Unit, Cumberland County Health Department, and Cumberland County Office of Emergency Management were all contacted and informed of the incident.  Communications were established between the departments and maintained for the duration of the incident for the public’s safety.  The Millville Office of Emergency Management was on the scene along with the Millville Fire Department, Millville Rescue, Millville Water Department, Millville Department of Public Works, and the Vineland Fire Department to assess the situation and discriminate information to the other organizations.  “Liquid Chlorine was found leaking from a 150 pound cylinder which is located in a remote area of the Millville facility.  The Millville Office of Emergency management was dispatched and confirmed that there was no offsite concern or risk to the public.  That information was relayed to the Cumberland County Office of Emergency Management as well as the other agencies involved”, said Freeholder William Whelan, Chairman of the Cumberland County Public Safety Committee.  A command post was established when the incident was discovered and authorities remained on the scene until the situation was mitigated.  The cylinder, which was leaking liquid chlorine due to a faulty regulator, was quickly contained by closing a valve that prevented any further flow of chlorine.  “There were no injuries during the incident.  All of the departments involved worked together seamlessly and did a great job.  I want to commend members of the NJ-ROIC, New Jersey State Police-ERB, the Cumberland County Office of Emergency Management, Cumberland County Hazardous Material Team, Cumberland County Health Department, Millville Office of Emergency Management, the Millville Fire Department, Millville Rescue Squad, Millville Water Department, Millville Department of Public Works, and the Vineland Fire Department, for a prompt response and a job well done”, said Cumberland County Freeholder Director Carl Kirstein.
