2/19/2011 - Millville Sets Snowflake Swim

Jumping into the bone-chilling water of Union Lake wearing nothing but a speedo and flip-flops in the dead of winter may seem crazy to most people. But, but for dedicated swimmers, it's worth the goosebumbs.

On Saturday, February 19th, the Millville Recreation Department, along with the Rocap-Shannon Memorial Funeral Hom and Millville Chiropractic, will host their seventh annual "Snowflake Swim" at Union Lake Park.

Millville Snowflake Swim - February 19, 2011The event will begin at 11 a.m. when swimmers will take the plunge to help raise $250 in scholarship money for the Millville Senior High School swimmer who is "most improved" during their season. All the other money will be donated to Team Pink Piglets, an entry in the Susan G. Komen 3 Day in Philadelphia.

There is a $10 registration fee and all participants are encouraged to pre-register at the Recreation Department, 416 South 15th Street. Swimmers must be over the age of 10 and anyone between the ages of 10 to 17 must be accompanied by an adult. Swimmers do not need to be Millville residents to participate, but must be in good health.

"The snowflake swim is a really fun event and a good way to beat the doldrums of winter," said Rob Shannon, one of the event organizers. "Each year, the event grows with participants and raises a lot of money for cancer research."
