In Search Of Post 9/11 Veterans

If you are a veteran who served in the military after September 11, 2001, the Cumberland County Board of Freeholders wants to honor you in a special medal ceremony later this month.

The Thursday, October 28th event is the latest in a series of ceremonies that began in 2004 to pay tribute to county residents who have served our country in the armed forces. The last one was held back in April.

What makes the upcoming ceremony unique is its focus on those who have served over the past nine years -- since the 9/11 attacks -- during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“We’ve been at war for nearly 10 years now,” said Freeholder Director Louis N. Magazzu. “And we want to say thanks to the men and women of Cumberland County who have made significant sacrifices during that time.”

Freeholder Nelson Thompson, a liaison to the Cumberland County Veterans Commission said, “We know there are still county residents serving in those war zones, and we owe them tremendous gratitude for what they’ve done and are doing to keep us safe at home.”

County Of Cumberland Veterans MedalThe medals incorporate the Cumberland County flag with stars that represent each of the county’s municipalities and townships.

The new director of the county Veterans Commission and Veterans Interment, Diana M. Pitman is reaching out to all post 9/11 veterans who might qualify for this important honor.

She asks that if you, or someone you know is eligible for the medal, to please contact her office at (856) 453-2239, preferably by Friday, October 15th.

Additional medal ceremonies will be held at future dates for those Veterans registering after the 15th.
