County Receives 2nd Highest Award in State for Clean Communities

Cumberland County Freeholder Director Louis Magazzu and Freeholder William Whelan, Co-Liaisons to the County Improvement Authority, announced today that Cumberland County has received a grant in the amount of $144,194.12 from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Clean Communities Program.

Director Magazzu said “I am delighted that we received the 2nd highest award in the State. Our County Improvement Authority, which administers this funding, does an excellent job in promoting this program particularly within our public schools.” Magazzu continued, “Reinforcing the message to our youth about littering, recycling and the significance of our environment really gives the students a sense of place about where they live and go to school”.

Co-Liaison Freeholder William Whelan said, “Some examples of how this money is used includes: public land clean-ups in the spring and fall, clean communities crews that help with cleaning county roadways, the adopt a road sign program and it also assists with off-setting costs for the public awareness program which includes display media, cable and brochures regarding the programs sponsored by the Cumberland County Improvement Authority". Whelan added “I also want to commend the Clean Communities Coordinator, Dennis DeMatte who does an amazing job with leveraging funding and making himself available to schools and other local organizations to promote the importance of being a good environmental steward whenever possible”.
