After over 30 years in education, Darlene Barber retired as Superintendent of Schools from the Cumberland County Board of Vocational Education in 2011. Prior to serving as CCTEC’s Superintendent of Schools, she held the position of Business Administrator (CCTEC) and Assistant Superintendent of Business at Upper Deerfield Township School. She also worked in several other Cumberland County School Districts. As a school leader, Darlene held many county and statewide officer and committee positions for the New Jersey County Council of Vocational Technical Schools and New Jersey Association of School Business Administrators. She managed over $12 million in school construction projects, worked on the original committee that developed the shared services county student transportation cooperative and instituted the integration of math/science into CCTEC’s career and technical programs. She also wrote, managed and supervised millions of dollars in grant projects.
Throughout her career, Darlene was published in national and state publications, testified in our state legislature, and met regularly with state and federal representatives on behalf of Cumberland County. Her latest publication, “Vision for Success”, is a strategic vision to prepare Cumberland County and its residents for 21st Century employment, higher education and life-long learning. She continues to work as an educational consultant and public speaker on both the local and national level. She is currently a member of the New Jersey Council of Education. In addition to her educational career,
Darlene is chair of the Cumberland County Empowerment Zone, the Inspira Hospital Advisory Committee, CCTEC’s Foundation Board, Bridgeton Kiwanis and the Bridgeton Legends Committee. She is a past president and coach of West Cumberland Little League, past president of Bridgeton Junior Woman’s Club, St. Teresa Parish Council member, Upper Deerfield Planning Board member and numerous fundraising committees. She is a graduate of the Cumberland County College’s Leadership Program, past member of CCC’s Strategic Planning Committee, Business & Industry Committee, Tri-County Community Action (Gateway) Board of Directors, County Economic Development Board, Business & Industry Ad-Hoc Committee, County Workforce Investment Board and the State of New Jersey Green Energy Career Council. Darlene graduated from Rowan University with a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration, holds a certificate in School Business Administration, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Resource Management. She graduated from Cumberland County College with an Associate’s Degree and was inducted into the college’s Distinguished Alumni Gallery in 1997.
Darlene is married to George Barber and resides in Upper Deerfield Township. George retired from Atlantic City Electric after 41 years of service. She has two children – George & Deanne. George is an aviation engineer and resides in Morgantown, WV with his wife Melissa and children George & Cassandra. Deanne practices real estate in Montgomery County, MD (outside Washington, DC), is married to husband Jay, and has three children - Jacob, Holly and Jessica.
