Established in 1963, the Cumberland County Library houses the CLUES central site equipment, coordinates many of the system's activities, and provides end-to-end computer and technical support for several of the member libraries as well as other libraries.

It was the first library in Cumberland County to offer public access Internet workstations. Today, it also maintains a computer lab along with public computers for children and adults. Cumberland County Library and it provides an in-depth reference collection to supplement the collections of other libraries in the county. The library purchases many CD-ROM and online databases, and provides multimedia services in the forms of CDs, videotape, DVD and other digital formats.

Beginning in the 1980's, the libraries of Cumberland County, New Jersey joined together to use new technologies to deliver materials and services efficiently and effectively to the residents of Cumberland County.

In 1991, the libraries automated their traditional services and united their catalogs and checkout systems, and the CLUES (Cumberland Libraries United Electronic System) consortium was born. Since then, the libraries have rapidly moved forward to offer the first public Internet acceess in our area as well as electronic databases, digital research periodicals and online reference materials. Downloadable audiobooks and e-books have joined the ever growing media used to deliver today's literature - paper, cassettes, CDs, other digitized formats, etc. In addition to paper and recorded audio products, the libraries provide education and recreational video and DVDs as well as traditional reference services, children's programming and computer training classes. All of the combines the best of library traditions and new innovations.

CLUES has grown from the 3 city libraries and the college library to also include 3 special libraries available to the public. All of this has been achieved through the cooperative efforts of independent libraries dedicated to using their collective resources to maximize returns on investment (ROI) and to deliver excellence in products and services.
