
The Forensic & Evidence units are a division of the Major Crimes Bureau overseen by the Bureau Commander. The unit has a dual function of Forensics and Evidence Management. The Unit is supervised by one Sergeant and a number of detectives who are specially trained in the use of sophisticated methods of collecting and preserving evidence. The Unit is also home to one paralegal secretary/evidence clerk, who manages the evidence collected for court proceedings. The Forensic Unit is primarily responsible for the processing of crime scenes and evidence on cases handled by the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office. They are available to municipal, state and Federal agencies during criminal investigations with the County of Cumberland. The Evidence Unit is primarily responsible for proper storage and handling of all evidence on cases pending trial within the County of Cumberland. It is the Unit's responsibility to inventory, store and secure all evidentiary items in a manner consistent with the laws of the State of New Jersey as well as disposing of evidence as prescribed by law.
