Human Relations Commission:
Committees

Youth Committee
The purpose of this committee is to support countywide activities relating to youth.  Activities may include but are not limited to academics, sports, and educational achievements or deficiencies therein.  Address problems in the area of crime, health, and welfare.  To promote community building through youth activities.  To promote the message of positive inter-group relations by promoting student led dialogue.

Education Committee
The purpose of this committee is to promote "prejudice reduction" education for youth and adults.  Activities may include but are not limited to:

  1. Identifying existing diversity and conflict.  Explore resolutions, training programs and other resources that can be used in schools and workforce.
  2. Work with local schools and superintendents to evaluate and enhance human rights and cultural diversity programs in the school curriculum.
  3. Prepare reports and recommendations as needed regarding educational issues.
  4. Assist county and local governments agencies with multi-cultural awareness programs.
  5. Recruit as needed, volunteers countywide to assist in the accomplishment of goals.
  6. Schedule at least one meeting of the committee per month exclusive of the regularly scheduled meeting of the Parent organization.

Bilingual, Puerto Rican, Mexican & Other Hispanic Population Committee
The mission is to address various issues related to subject communities.  This may include but not be limited to cultural diversity and Bilingual understanding.

Press & Publicity Committee
Publicize to the media activities of the Cumberland County Human Relations Commission or incidents relating thereto.  Advise membership of current events relating to the mission of the Human Relations Commission.  Advise Office of Bias Crimes of noteworthy activities as requested.

Bias Crime & Crisis Intervention Committee
This committee will facilitate dialogue between law enforcement and the community and address bias crime and other human relations issues of concern.  Activities may include but are not limited to:

  1. Developing policy proposals and assisting with the coordination of efforts to promote "prejudice-reduction" and prevent/deter bias crime.
  2. Assisting in diffusing tensions in communities experiencing difficulties stemming form the commission of bias incidents and/or crimes.  This committee will work in conjunction with other committees as needed.
  3. Work with the State Office of Bias Crime and Community Relations to recommend cultural diversity training programs for law enforcement personnel.
  4. Provide conciliation assistance as needed.

Activities, Recreation, & Events Committee
Plan and coordinate activities of the Cumberland County Human Relations Commission.  This includes but is not limited to the preparation of a calendar of special holidays and/or events peculiar to ethnic groups.  Insure that the Cumberland County Human Relations Commission is represented whenever possible at these events.  Schedule and coordinate all seminars, banquets and/or publicize events.  Submit completed plans to membership for approval.  Organize a lecture team to be available for lectures and speeches to the general public on selected topics.

Clergy Committee
Publicize the activities of the religious community.  Make recommendations therein.

Health, Alcohol & Substance Abuse, Blind & Visually Impaired Committee
Address an extensive array of programs and activities relating tot he health and well being of constituents.  This includes but is not limited to the committee making suggestions on how to address the issues of alcoholism, teen pregnancies, HIV, substance abuse, disabilities, mental illness, blind and visually impaired.  Make recommendations to improve the health and quality of life of Cumberland County residents.

Social Services Committee
The purpose of this committee is to develop communications between the Cumberland County Human Relations Commission and the public regarding various human relations issues.  Activities may include but are not limited to:

  1. Identifying and meeting with community based organizations, business, members of the religious community, youth and/or other individuals who can serve in an advisory capacity to the Cumberland County Human Relations Commission.
  2. Devising outreach programs to promote awareness of human relations issues ad the work of the Cumberland County Human Relations Commission.
  3. Present recommendations obtained from community outreach to the Cumberland County Human Relations Commission.
  4. Working with other committees as necessary.
