| 250th Anniversary Publications Governor Congratulates County - A letter from Christie Whitman, governor of New Jersey As the Governor of the State of New Jersey, I am delighted to offer my congratulations and best wishes to the citizens of Cumberland County as we celebrate the county's 250th anniversary. All New Jerseyans can take pride in Cumberland County's long and rich history and the contributions to our state's vibrancy made by generations of its citizens. From the founder of Welch's Grape Juice, Dr. Thomas Bramwell Welch, to word-renowned scientist Mary Adelia Treat, countless citizens boasting Cumberland County as their home have clearly and indelibly left their mark throughout the state, country, and world. The prosperity of every county, city and town depends greatly upon citizens' civic pride and energetic community involvement, both of which have helped shape two and a half centuries of great change in Cumberland County and the Garden State. I share with all New Jerseyans the hope that the communities of Cumberland County will continue to flourish throughout the centuries to come. Best wishes to all for an enjoyable and memorable 250th anniversary celebration. Sincerely yours, Christine Todd Whitman Governor Taken from The Press of Atlantic City; Cumberland County 250th Anniversary Special - 6/28/98
