Cumberland County Courthouse Completes Historic Preservation Renovations

October 5, 2023

Bridgeton, NJ

Historic renovations to the Cumberland County Courthouse were completed October 4, 2023, by Jones Masonry Restoration Corporation located in Harrisburg PA. The Cumberland County Courthouse is within the Bridgeton Historic District and is located at 60 West Broad St. in Bridgeton, NJ. It continues to function as the hub for County judicial proceedings and houses the offices of the Cumberland County Clerk and Surrogate.

The Courthouse complex we see today was constructed from north to south over the course of the 20th century. The original section was built in 1909 at the southeast corner of West Broad and Fayette Streets and faces north onto West Broad Street. A 1950’s addition is situated to the south along Fayette Street, and a 1990’s addition is attached to the south of the previous addition. The contractor of the present courthouse from 1909 to 1910 was H. H. Hankins & Brother started by Harry Hankins and Frank Hankins. H.H. Hankins & Brother is still active today located on Broad Street at the corner of Atlantic Street. In the lobby of the courthouse is a bell which rang when the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776.

The scope of work for this completed project focused only on the 1909 and 1950’s sections that were completed prior to the most recent expansion in the 1990’s. The renovations will preserve the historic landmark for many more years.

This project was funded by the County of Cumberland and a Historic Site Management Grant administered by the New Jersey Historic Trust. For more information, contact Cumberland County Administration at (856) 453-2125.
